The healing practice Reiki stems from traditions and knowledge of Eastern philosophies which attribute large significance to spiritual pureness, balance and to awareness of the essence of being. It probably comes from Japan; however it is not possible to trace and determine its origins according to historical sources. Some sources state that Reiki has been practised as early as 3,000 years BC by Egyptian priests. The Japanese words "rei-ki" describe a certain universal life energy coming from space that accompanies each of us since our birth. Under certain circumstances, this energy may be controlled formed and used according to basic principles of this natural healing practice.
The meaning of Reiki is not only to help fight physical and mental problems, but also to lead to understanding of life and to elimination of all negative influences in it. Although it has never been scientifically proven, Reiki practitioners believe Reiki may induce self-healing abilities of organism and thus mitigate or entirely remove manifests of illnesses. Anyone can receive and absorb the Reiki energy, but only a person "qualified" for a certain degree may use and give it. There are three degrees of Reiki - the last one is the Master degree. Some Reiki schools extend this system by further degrees that come after the aforementioned third degree.
Reiki History in Various Legends
If you looked for how Reiki came into being, you would probably found a lot of materials. But as the article introduction suggests, you would probably end up in Japan. The name most related to Reiki is MikaoUsui. The legend of this man tells that he spent a significant part of his life studying old papers on ancient spiritual healing. He strived to renew these methods, but he only kept finding only theoretical results or descriptions of healing results. He never found more concrete information on procedures or technique used in therapy. However, he did realise that in order to achieve success, he must meditate. And so he set off to the Kuriyama where he meditated and fasted for 21 days. During this time, he came to enlightenment and acquired a unique power to heal the ill. This very healer established the five established Reiki principles. You may encounter various translations of these spiritual principles, but their meaning should be as follows:
At least for today do not be angry,
At least for today do not worry,
At least for today be grateful,
At least for today work with diligence,
At least for today be kind to people.
What is the Main Reiki Principle?
As it has been mentioned above, the essence of Reiki is work with energy of various vibrations. When healing, the Master or an attuned practitioner puts his/her hands on the body of the one undergoing the attunement in order to enable him/her access to the energy and the ability to carry it in the future. The energy pours out of the body through hands. Places, pauses, movements and touches are specified in the teaching; each step has its time that needs to be observed. It is also very important for the one wanting to use the Reiki force to reallyyearn for it and be convinced about it. The therapy should not be performed without consent and realisation, apart from specific situation, e.g. when it comes to children or unconscious people or people in coma.
Reiki may affect people, but also animals, plants, minerals and various other objects in this world. A person attuned into Reiki may also work with the energy on themselves; in such a case it is auto-healing which requires deep concentration.
Dividing Reiki into Individual Degrees
In a certain sense, Reiki may be divided into individual degrees. You remember from the introduction that there are three degrees. They are called Reiki I, Reiki II a Reiki III, and put simply we can say that the higher the degree the deeper and more extensive Reiki sensitivity required and of course the broader options of its processing and application.
- Reiki I: towards self-healing or healing of others
Attunement into the first degree Reiki involves the initial tuning and opening of chakras. The goal of this process is to enable the given person to accept energy, to allow the energy to flow in them and act on the state of mind, mental and physical processes. Therefore, energy blocks and obstacles are removed or removal activation is initiated and four upper chakras are awakened. Most Reiki Masters prefer this initial attunement to take place within two days, as it is very demanding in terms of relaxation and concentration. The ability the student gains with this step cannot be limited by anything in their future life.
- Reiki II: improves and extends the possibilities to self-healing and to healing others (even remotely), at the same time it shortens time required for successful therapy
The second-degree Reiki introduces the possibilities of work with universal energy into the life of the attuned. There should be a time gap between transitions from the first degree to the second, preferably 8 to 12 weeks. During this time, negative blockades in the body are destroyed and they will not disrupt energy flow in any way. That is why Reiki Masters recommend not the hurry the individual stages. Reiki II allows the attuned to work with symbols and intensify effects of the necessary energy which one can give after this attunement regardless of time or place.
- Reiki III: brings deep theoretical and practical knowledge, the student becomes a Master
Achieving the third degree requires devoted approach to Reiki and many changes that will lead to personal growth and spiritual balance. It requires systematic, high quality and responsible work with energy, or with symbols and flawless use of correct methods. This is achieved after several years of intensive use of these healing methods. The student also obtains symbols proving their Master level of Reiki skills. After this attunement, the new Master may pass their teaching to other people interested and lead them to the third degree of Reiki. Before learning actively, they should concern for a long time with Master work with this energy in order to gain valuable and needed experience without which they will not be able to get to the Reiki essence.
The Four Symbols of Reiki
There are various symbols accompanying Reiki. Each symbol is defined by a name and shape and it has to be activated before use - by drawing it or repeat its name. The first degree has no symbols. The second degree has three symbols (they can be considered basic) and the third degree has two Reiki symbols which are mostly "tokens" of attunement. The Reiki symbols are a very hot topic and various resources state varying information about them. These ambiguities are not only the result of effort to keep them secret because they should represent something sacred, but also the fact that Reiki teaching comes from various schools. We have mentioned in the article that some consider three degrees of Reiki, others more; there are similar discrepancies in the issue of symbols. Despite that, we will try and describe the three basic Reiki symbols to you.
- The First Reiki Symbol Cho-ku-rei
This symbol increases the energy intensity; it is the initial key to open the necessary chakras and energy centres within a person. It also helps resist and fight negative energies acting on people.
- The Second Reiki Symbol Sei-he-ki
This symbol serves for self-healing, purification and spiritual protection. It helps the person to open the path to the deep subconscious where they can remove even the strongest blockades and allow their inner self to get attuned to the Reiki energy.
- The Third Reiki Symbol Hon-sha-ze-sho-nen
The third symbol is for remote healing; it helps overcome spatial and time boundaries to allow Reiki energy flow regardless of the location of the sender and the receiver. It is designed to heal physical problems.
Is It True That Reiki May Do Harm In Certain Cases?
From time to time, people appear in lay circles that are skeptical towards any alternative ways of life and so they doubt and criticize the effects. These tendencies do not avoid Reiki. You can encounter opinions that Reiki is harmful. Where is the truth then? Is Reiki safe or does it have any limitations? Experienced Masters and other people who devoted themselves to Reiki say that the life-giving energy itself cannot do any harm and has no limitations in its help to children or elderly. However, it is necessary to handle it on the basis of knowledge and deep attunement to Reiki. Both giving and accepting the energy should be gestures of free will and true conviction.
There is a saying "Wrong steps can turn a good and honest intention into a bad consequence"; that also applies to Reiki. So if you are considering taking part in a session with a Reiki practitioner or getting attunement for yourself, arrange a noncommittal meeting and rely on the first impression which never lies. Your Master must seem nice to you, they have to radiate pleasant energy and from the way they will talk about Reiki, you will get to know their way of life and degree of knowledge.
It has recently become fashionable to use these ancient healing methods, which is why even Reiki sometimes becomes business and attracts many fraudsters who want to make profit in this wave of interest.
Whether you take the Reiki path or not, always remember that even though natural methods are very interesting, they will never fully substitute classic medicine, although they may complement it. Perceive Reiki as an opportunity to enrich your life and a helper in treatment of ailments. The spiritual essence of Reiki will bring many changes into your life and active use of energy will help you in many ways.
