Cranial-sacral therapy and cranial-sacral biodynamics are gentle methods that accelerate and increase the self-healing ability of the human body. Mysterious-sounding name hides a relatively modern therapy, which is conventional medicine questioning, because it is based on theories that do not comply with many numbers of assumptions of anatomy, how it is perceived by western medicine. Nevertheless, this method is used and has positive results on the human body and soul.
In the course of our lives, we suffer with different illness, injury, exertion, stress, unpleasant experiences and so on and we create in our psychophysical system blocks and places of great tension. Cranial-sacral therapy methods help to remove these blocks. During cranial-sacral therapy and in the days, which come after this therapy, releases our organism these tensions and restores full flow of energy and vitality. The pain disappears, affected part of our body is regenerating, and the whole organism is harmonizing and its ability to tolerate the pain increases. Besides its undeniable effect in treating physical pain is cranial-sacral therapy also used to improve human mental condition.
Physical problems during which is the cranial-sacral therapy and cranial-sacral biodynamics used are mainly these:
- Back and neck pain
- Spinal pain
- Eye problems
- Joint pain in degenerative changes
- The treatment of inflammation of the trigeminal nerve and the etc.
It is used as a tool for the treatment and alleviation of depression, trauma, and post-traumatic symptoms for dissolving emotional blocks and severe stress. These methods of treatment can also be used for children and pregnant women and they are also a suitable preparation for childbirth and postpartum integration, they are used as part of treatment for hyperactive children and children with learning disabilities. It also mentioned a positive shift in the treatment of autism and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Very fine tactile therapy applied to principles cranial-sacral system improves the body's natural healing processes and proves to be an effective treatment for a wide spectrum of medical conditions related to neurological dysfunction.
The history of the discovery of the cranial-sacral system and the genesis of therapies
The foundations of this profession laid Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the early 20th century, who developed osteopathy (science about bone disease). Dr. William Sutherland (Missouri - USA), has further expanded this method with the discovery that the skull bones are not firmly fixed, but may move. He developed a manipulative technique that an aim is to identify irregular movement of the skull bones and regulate them for the functional movement. Dr. John Upleger (Michigan - USA) has improved further this method. He discovered so called craniosacral rhythm and developed a therapy usable for the general public, from laymen to doctors. This therapy allows to care about patient in virtually any environment, whether home or hospital.
Craniosacral system and the craniosacral rhythm
Craniosacral system of human beings consists of the membranes - meninges and the cerebrospinal fluid - which surrounds and protects the brain and spinal canal. This system is based on the cranium, a human skull, and continues down to sacrum. Any restriction in the membrane system can directly influence various physiological functions of the central nervous system of any human beings.
Physiology of the craniosacral system can be described as filling and emptying of the brain ventricles and washing of the brain and spinal membranes with cerebrospinal fluid. The fluid is filtered from the blood in a dynamic circuit with feedback. When is the capacity of fluid increased the pressure is increased too and hence the brain and spinal cord are washed in a manner similar semi-closed hydraulic system. Cyclical rhythm of the craniosacral system, which is a regular and the person is healthy has 6-12 cycles per minute. Craniosacral system is consisting of a large movement of the brain and spinal cord, and movement of cerebrospinal fluid, movement of intracranial and intra-spinal membranes, and movement of sacral bone between the hipbones, mobility of cranial bone, and mobility of body fascia, which is connected with other parts of the body via the central nervous system.
Craniosacral system disorders can lead to sensory, motoric, and neurological disorders, and a variety of psychological dysfunction. Craniosacral therapy stimulates the mechanism of improving the functioning of the brain and spinal cord, dispels the negative effects of stress, and helps self-regulation of the entire human organism.
A ten steps protocol for craniosacral therapy
Craniosacral therapy consists of a series of techniques that have a common basis. Each step of the therapy is in the same time evaluating (diagnostic) and corrective (therapeutic) tool.
Ten Point Protocol:
- Induction of the still point
- Freeing transverse fascia: pelvic, diaphragm, upper thoracic aperture, the hyoid and atlas joints
- Decompression of lumbar-sacral transition, medial compression of hip blade and traction of the dural tube
- Cradling and sliding within the dural cups or tube
- Front traction (mobilization of frontal bone)
- Parietal traction (mobilization of parietal bone)
- Decompression of sphenoid synchondrosis
- Temporal techniques (mobilization of temporal bones)
- Compression and decompression of temporomandibular joint
- Compression of fourth brain ventricle (induction of still point)
It is very important is to abide the accuracy of the application of individual procedures and therapeutic techniques, the order does not have to be strictly abided as shown (especially for advanced users CST, but for beginners is this order very useful instruction).
Craniosacral therapy from a professional medical perspective
Craniosacral therapy can be classified on an interface between allopathic ostheotherapy (conventional medicine) and psychophysiological auto regulation (alternative medicine). It works on using knowledge of principle of circulation of cerebrospinal fluid - the craniosacral rhythm. Hands of the therapist perceive craniosacral rhythm even over the clothes and he can affect the quality and frequency if he detects an irregularity or disharmony. This is very important, because the imbalance of craniosacral rhythm may be responsible for various health and psychological problems.
Sceptical views on craniosacral therapy
The main medical schools criticize craniosacral therapy, primarily because it is built on theories that oppugn the whole range of theories used in conventional medicine. Some sceptics argue that the whole theory behind craniosacral therapy is pointless, because the skull bones unites during the childhood and cerebrospinal fluid has no discernible rhythm. These objections are not fully accepted. In some areas of Europe is within medical scientists accepted the fact that the skull bones have the potential to move.
Relationship between craniosacral therapy and central nervous system
The central nervous system controls and affects the processes in our body. It is the most important communication and coordination networks in our body. On the proper functioning of the central nervous system and neural networks depends all vital systems, relevant organs, their function, and psychological well-being. The brain continuously receives and transmits to every corner of our body signals about what is going on and what needs to be done. Problems with nerve transmission and the imbalance of nerve impulses are causing imbalance in the body and the failure of the functioning of processes in the body. When the nervous system is in equilibrium, then it is possible to start the correct functioning of the whole organism and its self-healing process.
Craniosacral therapy from a spiritual point of view
Experience shows that the spiritual consciousness of human beings and their sensitivity is during the regular craniosacral therapy increasing. The blocks in the mind dissolves and even mind is depositing its experiences and thoughts into the body, into the memory cell. During the craniosacral therapy are the blocks spontaneously released, subconscious of the mind is cleaning and energy is unblocked, body is convalescing and so is the mind. Thanks to the smooth flow of energy of meridians (see. the knowledge of Chinese medicine) are all organs convalescing and recovering.
The effects and success of craniosacral therapy
In the Czech Republic is craniosacral therapy still perceived primarily as an alternative method of therapy and it is not still very widespread, although the successes of the treatment are quite high. Craniosacral therapy is a part of so-called Causal medicine, which is looking for context and causes, and which is trying to find the roots of the problems. It is looking for the cause of problems, especially in our minds. Body and soul are perceived as a complex and craniosacral therapy starts self-healing process in a rate that is optimal for our body. The method is relatively gentle and safe. Success depends on the regularity of treatment and it is suitable for the improvement of the spiritual consciousness of any human being.
The frequency of visits to a therapist is recommended at intervals of one to three weeks, one session usually lasts 30-60-90 minutes and it ends after subsiding of the troubles. Its action is preventive - increases immunity, counteracts stress and depression, and it is suitable for the overall balancing of the mental harmony. Therapy is usually done in lying position on the back. Therapy itself is calm and pleasant. First, the therapist establishes contact with the client, they mutually transmit information about problems with which is the client is coming. If it is umpteenth visit, then they together evaluate the progress of the therapy.
During the therapy, the client lies quietly on the bed and is ask to stay in peace and cooperate. This therapy works through clothing, with light pressure, therapist put his hands on an individual spots on the head and body of the client. He connects himself to the craniosacral rhythm and releases the hotspots. He lingers on these hotspots until they are relaxed and the tissue is released, which can take several minutes. Sensitive clients can feel movement of cranial bones, they can also feel the release of tension in the tissues and reduce of mental stress. When you release mental blocks, it may cause intense emotional or physical reactions. Therapist does not preclude the spontaneous emotional or physical reactions. He is not interfering. He is only guiding, sensitively and subtly.
